Symbolism: The Language of the Occult

How symbols have been used throughout history as a universal language—across spirituality, religion, esoteric traditions, and culture.

✨ Introduction

What is a Symbol?

A symbol is a depicted image that stands for something else. Whether it be a picture, an object, a colour, an animal, a shape, or even a sound. When we see it, our minds connect it to an idea, memory, feeling, or belief. Symbols help us understand ideas that can be difficult to explain with words alone.

Why Do Humans Communicate Through Symbols?

Humans have always used symbols because they help us tell stories quicker. Long before many people could read or write, knowledge was passed through paintings, carvings, songs, ceremonies, oral teachings and objects. A single symbol could remind an entire community of a story, a warning, a law/lore, or an important lesson.

Even today we use symbols every day without thinking about it. Symbols are one of humanity's oldest languages.

Symbols as Compressed Stories, Beliefs and Ideas

You can think of a symbol like a tiny file containing a much bigger story.

When someone sees a cross, they may think of Christianity. When someone sees a rainbow, they may think of diversity, hope, or the LGBTQIA+ community. When someone sees a crown, they may think of power or royalty.

The image itself is simple, but everything people associate with it is much larger. That is why symbols are so powerful. They allow generations of history, culture, emotion, and belief to be carried inside a single image.

Personal Symbols vs Institutional Symbols

Not all symbols are created for the same reason.

Personal symbols are meanings we create ourselves through our own lived experience.

Institutional symbols are created or adopted by groups such as governments, religions, businesses, political movements, schools, or organisations.

National flags, religious emblems, military badges, corporate logos and official seals are all institutional symbols. They are designed to communicate shared identity, authority, values or beliefs to many people at once.

Sometimes a personal symbol and an institutional symbol overlap. Sometimes they conflict. A symbol that inspires one person may carry painful memories for another.

This reminds us that symbols do not have fixed meanings. Their significance often depends on history, culture and personal experience.
